Our Concerns
- Costs could increase dramatically but would be protected, with further cuts needed
elsewhere.
- There is no available business case and total costs are not known.
- Defra do not have a copy of the contract/ final business case, or know the overall
costs of this project; but hand over £5.5 million in PFI credits annually.
- Waste levels are falling: recycling is growing and there are better and cheaper
ways to deal with waste than burning it.
- There is already an overcapacity of incineration.
- There are much cheaper and more efficient ways of generating energy from waste.
- We need to protect resources, once burned they are gone forever.
Kings Lynn PFI incinerator has a full business case available since last year, with
total predicted costs over £1 billion as was the case with Coventry and other proposed
incinerators.
A similar overall figure is expected for the proposed Gloucester incinerator which
is being built by part of the same company we believe.
In the absence of financial information or a costed Business Case we can only assume
that this incinerator will cost the taxpayer a similar amount.
